Customer Reviews

Gerber calls this their successor to the infamous Mark II, which is the knife I've trained with (and kept faithful to) since 1980, and I have to say they've definitely done well with this knife. It's a great design, well balanced, comfortable, ergonomic, and functions as a utility knife (much better than calling the Mark II a "survival knife"). The rubberized grip and full tang are a definite improvement over the Mark II (I managed to snap my first L6 Mark II off at the guard--very tragic). It's not a "chopper" and I don't think I'd use it for batoning, but there are partial finger choils just ahead of the guard that let you choke up nicely for close work. My version is the black finish with the very short run of large serrations, which seem perfectly efficient for cord cutting without sacrificing much fine edge. My only con is the sheath: the release system is very stubborn both in and out (I like the release system on the LMF/Prodigy much better). The smaller LMF and Prodigy are great knives (especially for utility use), but I like a bigger blade and the feel of the LHR is just sweet...
Gerber, make more knives like this!

Yes...this is a great knife...and appears to be a lower priced copy of some pricier Reeve knives. Anyway, the sheath contraption is a great design, but I took off just one star, because I think it could have been designed a little better. There are a few corner edges that could have been more rounded, since a lot of use will damage your thumbnails. FYI...if you get this knife, do not try to pull the knife while unsheathing it. Instead, just practice forcing back the security tab with your thumb while pushing the sheath off the blade. No amount of tugging will help to get this knife out of the sheath, so just think in terms of pushing the tab to push the sheath away from the blade. The sheath is very strong and has a lot of attachment options, so I consider this to be a very high value purchase.
