I got this for going camping and to keep for security around the house. Great weight and solid. Not flimsy at all. Nicely constructed. Ok it did not come to sharpened, but what do you expect for mail order. That's like getting gun in the mail and it not coming loaded. A $3 sharpener from Harbor Freight store.
I had heard good things about M-Tech knives and ordered a few. I've received two and this was by far the worse of the two. See my review about the brother to this, the rescue team tanto knife, and you'll see why a lot of people are surprised at the quality of the M-Tech knives. While this knife was almost an identical design, it would guess it was made by a different supplier, at least a different guy.
The blade profile is nice and is an obvious copy of a Ka-Bar. My copy has a sturdy finger guard that is well attached and I see no gaps with the handle or blade. The handle is a hard rubber that is slick even when dry. The pommel fits poorly, there are large gaps around the tang extension and the pin fits loosely. I'll need to do something there or it will come off eventually. Another guy removed and glued his, it doesn't seem like the best idea but that's probably what I'll do instead of investing too much time in figuring out something better.
The blade has a good heft to it and is 1/4" at the spine. The flat grind starts on the bottom 1/3rd with two blood grooves above it. The knife came with no edge at all, which was OK since I bought these to practice sharpening anyway. Still, it was honestly duller than a butter knife. With the crappy crinkle paint finish it looked like that whole thing had been cast rather than forged. Fortunately I was able to put a good edge on it and it cuts paper easily - no indication how long the edge will last, but the stainless (440) seems to be pretty hard from all the sharpening I had to do. That crappy paint finish is already coming off from just handling it and I don't care since it is a beater knife.
I give it 3 stars and think it is a serviceable knife if you're up for a project. Oh, the sheath is really crappy too. The M-Tech Rescue Team Tanto I got a couple of days later was a couple of bucks cheaper and a better knife in every way. Unfortunately the tanto point is not as useful for general chores as this drop point. Still I would readily buy another tanto. The next time I look at a drop point like this I need to step up to a Ka-Bar.
